Embora o engajamento e participação dos jovens seja uma das quatro áreas prioritárias da Aliança de Civilização das Nações Unidas, as recomendações da juventude a serem anunciadas na Plenária de Abertura da 3ª edição anual do Fórum da Aliança de Civilizações da ONU (UNAOC) foram omitidas do programa do Fórum principal. O Fórum do Rio está sendo realizado na sexta-feira (28 maio) e no sábado (29 de maio) no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.
O UNAOC foi criado em 2005, por iniciativa dos Governos da Espanha e da Turquia, sob os auspícios das Nações Unidas. Um Grupo de Especialistas de alto nível foi formado pelo ex-Secretário-Geral Kofi Annan para explorar as raízes da polarização entre as sociedades e culturas de hoje, e para recomendar um programa concreto de ação para resolver esta questão. Para cumprir este mandato, o UNAOC trabalha principalmente em quatro áreas: juventude, mídia, educação e migração.
Por meio desta declaração, a delegação de 140 jovens que participam do Fórum do Rio desejam expressar a sua profunda desilusão com a omissão das recomendações. Eles compilaram estas recomendações como um resultado de consultas encomendadas pelo Fórum de Juventude da UNAOC, que teve lugar na quinta-feira, dia 27 maio de 2010.
Esta omissão é ainda mais pungente porque a maioria dos palestrantes de alto nível que fizeram comentários no Fórum destacaram a importância da participação dos jovens na cena global. Ao ignorar descaradamente as recomendações da juventude, eles elucidaram sua ambivalência em relação a questões relevantes para a juventude. O Secretário-Geral da ONU Ban Ki-Moon disse: “Precisamos aprender com a juventude”. Como os formuladores de políticas públicas aprenderão de nós, se eles se recusam a ouvir nossas vozes?

While youth engagement and participation is one of United Nations Alliance of Civilization’s four main priority areas, the youth recommendations to be announced at the Opening Plenary of the 3rd annual United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Forum were omitted from the main Forum program. The Rio Forum is currently being held from Friday, May 28th through Saturday, May 29th 2010 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
The UNAOC was established in 2005, at the initiative of the Governments of Spain and Turkey, under the auspices of the United Nations. A high-level Group of Experts was formed by former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to explore the roots of polarization between societies and cultures today, and to recommend a practical program of action to address this issue. In order to fulfil this mandate, the UNAOC works primarily in four areas: youth, media, education and migration.
By way of this statement, the 140+ youth delegation attending the Rio Forum wish to express their extreme disappointment at the omission of the recommendations. They compiled these recommendations as a result of consultations mandated by the UNAOC Youth Forum, which took place on Thursday May 27, 2010.
This omission is even more poignant because the majority of high-level speakers who made comments at the forum stressed the importance of youth participation on the global stage. By blatantly ignoring the youth recommendations, they have elucidated their ambivalence to issues relevant to youth. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said, “We need to learn from youth.” How will policy makers learn from us if they refuse to listen to our voices?

I heard this forum had a good profile and lay out from a colleague in the States who attended the forum.He stated the youth recommendations were too short! this was a youth forum that brought so many young minds, opinions, backgrounds, cultures together and we felt that they should have had a better voice… the above statement shows the will and effort these young people are putting in to make that difference. I can say for sure that Vaishali Morjaria who travelled from Kenya is a pioneer and has a very unique opinion on things as she is a master of all traits and I was very happy that she was one of the youth to attend such forums to voice for her country via her experiences in so many areas of counseling, ethics, art therapy and new media. she has been exposed Internationally in various ways! I wish more of these youth forums are held all over the world and they are given a chance to drive the forums! Vaishali its good to see u getting involved in such activities! hope to see more of u!
