Por completo desinteresse do público, a gigante de ‘fast food’ McDonald’s fechou em dezembro de 2002 todas as suas instalações na Bolívia. Todos os esforços da cadeia de alimentos para se inserir no mercado boliviano foram infrutíferas. ‘Não adiantou usar o molho picante ‘llajwa’, o favorito do altiplano, nem realizar apresentações das melhores bandas locais’, apontou o site LaRed21.
A rede estadunidense decidiu encerrar suas atividades no país após 5 anos. Havia, no total, oito lojas nas três principais cidades (La Paz, Cochabamba e Santa Cruz de la Sierra).
Foi o primeiro país latino-americano que ficou sem o McDonald’s e o primeiro país do mundo onde a empresa fechou por manter seus números no vermelho.
O diretor Fernando Martinez explicou em entrevista ao site ‘TreeHugger’ que, em espanhol, a palavra sabor (que em inglês pode ser também ‘gosto’, ‘taste’) etimologicamente deriva da palavra ‘conhecimento’ (‘saber’): sabor é saber.
“A Bolívia é um país pobre, com pouco acesso a bens materiais, mas sua estreita relação com a terra cria uma forte relação com a comida. A Bolívia celebra a vida com comida e dança. Os sabores intensos e tradicionais são a representação do nosso povo, eles marcam o ritmo da vida. A comida é quase um ritual em ambas as cidades e áreas rurais. Quanto aos alimentos locais, eu amo um prato nativo de Potosi chamado kalapurka.

Eu lembro quando o McDonald’s faliu na Bolívia, atualmente o Burger King está falido levando prejuízo atrás de prejuízo, só não fechou as portas por orgulho. Curiosamente existe um fast-food boliviano chamado Pollos Copacabana que é idêntico ao McDonald’s e Burger King, mesmo formato, mas é um sucesso total, sempre cheio e é meu favorito lá. O que eu sinto é uma aversão a restaurantes estrangeiros e uma admiração pelo que é nacional.
