The Brazilian Movement for Human Rights, Minas Gerais chapter, and the Institute for Human Rights – DH, MIDHIA – Communication and Human Rights by this notification repudiate the constant killing threats and intimidations suffered by Friar Gilvander Luis Moreira, a defender of human rights.
The struggles undertaken and the pro human rights banners unfurled in defense of the poor of Belo Horizonte and the rest of the state of Minas Gerais has disturbed sectors which for quite some time have done everything to intimidate and silence the voice of this prophet.
On June 21, 2012 Friar Gilvander Luis Moreira got a homage from the town council of Belo Horizonte and was indicated for the Diploma of Honor and Merit by Alderman Adriano Ventura
The day after the homage Friar Gilvander Moreira was threatened again over the telephone. Calls and threats followed on the 25th, 26th, and today the 27th of June. Amidst words of threat and intimidation the aggressor uses obscene words and suggests that the friar move away from Belo Horizonte as soon as possible and that his “potato has already been baked.” Entities and movements which want to can divulge this information through their networks and contacts.
We would like to inform everyone that we are taking the measures necessary together with the competent authorities so that the threats and intimidations will stop.
Friar Gilvander is still covered by the Program for Protection of Human Rights of the State of Minas Gerais – PDDH-MG – enforced by Decree No. 6,044/2007 in a partnership with the Secretariat for Human Rights of the Presidency of the Republic (SEDH), the state Secretariat of Social Development (SEDESE), and the Institute for Human Rights (Instituto DH).
